Short Curly Hairstyle Tips

Whether you were lucky to be born with natural curls or just want that feeling of a bouncy curl, it's easy to utilize a variety of hair caretechniques to achieve a fun, flirty curly hairstyle for your short hair.

If you were blessed with natural curls, the right hair care products and styling tools can easily transform your out-of-control frizz to sleek ringlets.

If you weren't blessed with natural curls, never fear, you don't need to resort to harsh chemical perms or other hair treatments to create luscious texture and movement.

A myriad of curl and wave patterns can be created naturally, without harsh chemicals, on any type, texture or condition of hair. Most hairdressers suggest that if your hair has been colored or chemically treated in any way, that specifically avoid the use of hair perms which can cause potential damage to your strands.

Cynthia Basinet (shown above) is a great role model for wearing a short layered hairstyle that is a cross between a bob and a shag. Cynthia is a sultry and elegant singer, actress and model. The beautiful redhead appears to prefer short hairstyles, which look spectacular on her. Lately the star has been photographed wearing a variety of sassy soft curls that are currently in hair fashion. She alternates between wearing a soft sweeping side fringe with pulling her hair off her forehead. She alternates also between waves and curls.

Short Curly Style Tips For Natural Curls

If your hair is naturally curly, depending on the curl pattern you may opt to go with curls from the hairline down to the ends. The best way to transform tight natural ringlets into soft wavy curls like Cynthia's is to complete the following steps:

1. Shampoo with moisturizing shampoo designed for your hair's current type, condition and texture. If you prefer, wash with conditioner only or a diluted formula that works best for you.

2. Use a rinse out conditioner if appropriate for your hair's type, texture and condition. Keep in mind that if hair is too soft, curls may not hold their shape as well. You may wish to only spot condition or use a diluted rinse-out conditioning product.

3. If possible, finish with cool/cold water rinse to close cuticles and add natural shine.

4. Apply a cocktail the includes a good defrisant product, leave-in conditioner and styling mousse to protect hair against frizz, provide extra conditioning and help create good curl profiles.

5. Separate long sweeping bangs from rest of hair. Apply a dollop of straightening gel to the bang and top of the hair line area.

6. Use a paddle brush and a blow dryer with a concentrator. Direct blow dryer down the hair shaft from roots to ends to get hair straight with the added bonus of extra shine.

8. Attach a long finger diffuser to your blow dryer. Keeping fingers and hands out of hair as much as possible (to prevent frizz) separate remaining strands into individual 2" sections. Using the blow dryer on a medium, low to medium heat setting, use the fingers to lift and enhance natural curls.

9. Dry until 100% dry. Use a curling iron to refine the curls if you wish. Finish with a blast of shine spray and hairspray to block humidity and add shine.

Short Curly Style Tips For Straight Hair

If you are not blessed with natural curls you have several options that are all based on natural, non-chemical treatments.

1. Hot Roller/Iron Set
Shampoo, condition and blow dry strands with round brush. Use hot rollers or hot curling iron to create desired curls.

2. Foam, Rag, Hook & Loop Style Roller Set
Shampoo, condition and blow dry tresses with round brush until 75% dry, set on foam, rag or hook & loop fastener style rollers and let curls reform as hair cools and dries. Optionally hair can be set and allowed to air-dry or dry overnight while sleeping.

3. Wet set.
Shampoo and condition hair. Blot out most of excess moisture. Set hair on hook & loop fastener style rollers, foam or rag rollers. Sit under hood dryer until hair is 100% dry. Remove curlers and finger pick.

4. Wet Pin Curl Set
Shampoo and condition hair. Blot out most of excess moisture. Set hair on pin curls created with traditional bobby pins. Sit under hood dryer until hair is 100% dry. Remove curlers and finger pick. Optionally the set can be slept on all night and curls allowed to air-dry. Finger pick to desired shape.

5. Scrunch & Go
If you are only interested in loose waves and/or curls and your hair has natural waves and/or bends, you can achieve an element of texture by scrunching. Keep in mind that scrunching does not work as well for stick straight, fine or thin strands. Apply a good styling mousse, gel or similar styling product to damp strands. Using fingers, scrunch hair as you blow dry. For more curl, use a curling iron to fine tune the resulting texture.

6. Wet Bunning
If your hair is super short, this is not an option. However, if you have a short bob with enough length to pull into a tiny bun, you can shampoo, condition and apply styling products to damp hair. Pull into a bun and twist strands as you are creating the bun. Pin the bun into place. Let the bun air-dry and undo bun. This should create loose waves. Use a curling iron to add random curls.

Other options, depending on the length of your hair, the texture, type and condition would include creating a pattern of tiny braids on your damp strands and letting them air dry. Remove the braids and you should have lots of hair ripples and tiny waves.

Be creative and combine several of the options to create unique soft curl and wave patterns.

Summary

Texture such as curls and waves are sizzling hot. Whether you have short hair with natural curls or straight strands, you can still enjoy beautiful texture without damaging chemicals, perms or other treatments. Experiment with the options and steps presented in this article and enjoy the results.

Like short hair styles of any other type, short curly hair styles make a statement.

If you're a woman with curly hair you're already seen as wild, undisciplined, out of control and sensual. Wearing a short hair style will get you tagged as confident as well.

For women much more than for men, leaving your face completely uncovered means you have nothing to hide. No imperfections, no flaws, no irregularities. No lies.

Everything you are is on display, and you're happy with it.

That's a confident statement to make in a world where women constantly scrutinize each other, ruthlessly dissecting the appearance of friends and strangers alike.

Just having curly hair doesn't mean that short curly hairstyles are where you should be headed.

You need to be sure about that before you go there.

A short curly hair styles can look gorgeous or it can look horrible. In both cases, the reason is face shape.

In terms of an abstract perception of beauty, oval faces are the ideal - they have balance. These are the faces that look good with short hair styles.

But life's uneven, and not everyone has an oval face.

Whatever shape your face may be, that's what you have to work with. You can't change it - well you can, if you can access more money than good judgement.

But happily most people will choose to work with the face they have. That's where hair styles come in, after all. A woman's hair is more than a mere accessory - it's fundamental to her looks.

If your cheeks are too wide, bring your hair in and soften their line. Chin too narrow? Build width around it, using your hair.

Making the move to short curly hair styles means abandoning all the flexibility that long and medium length hair affords you. You're leaving your backup behind and relying solely on your face.

There's nowhere to hide if you get a short hair cut and it doesn't suit you. All you can do is wait until your hair grows back.

Does that mean curly hair short styles aren't worth the trouble?

No way!

If short curly hair styles work for you, they're attention pullers. Eye grabbers. Blood pressure raisers. And you'll love wearing them!

Curly hair short styles are sexy. And cute.

But they have to suit your face.

As you browse the pictures of curly hair short styles here and on the other pages of Curly Hair Styles Magazine, remember to look at the face shapes of the models. There are lots of different hair styles, lots of different ideas, and lots of different faces.

And if you haven't cut your curly hair short yet, consider trying on some Virtual Hair Styles before you face the scissors.

Curly wedding hair. It conjures up images of long curly hair coiled into an elegant updo and crowned with tiara and veil.

It can be like that.

But it doesn't have to be, as the twelve styles and fifteen pictures in this wedding hair photo gallery clearly demonstrate.

For one thing, up styles are not just for long hair.

An updo for short or medium length hair, like the one shown in the second picture of our gallery, can be really gorgeous.

Here the hair is gathered in elegant braids at the back while, in classic curly updo style, strands have been left loose to frame the bride's face. Everywhere in this wedding hair style, the natural curly texture of the bride's hair is preserved, celebrated and shown off.

Curly wedding hair can also mean a short, naturally wavy hair style like the last picture in this gallery. Needing no adornment, this bridal hair style simple, beautiful and elegant, all at the same time.

Long Curly Wedding Hair - Down Styles

Two long but very different curly wedding hair down styles can be found in the third picture of the top row, and the last picture of the middle row.

The middle row picture could easily be mistaken for a street style were it not for the inclusion of a bridal veil. In either setting it's a beautiful hair style.

The top row picture is a much more formal and traditional wedding hair style, swept up and back with a tiara encircling the line where the hair is raised.

One bride has three pictures here.

Photo one in the last row of the gallery is a formal bridal photograph, posed, poised and dutifully smiling. The curls in this woman's long dark hair are dazzling as they effortlessly link the textures of veil, skin and wedding dress. The tiara stands solemnly at the top.

But curly wedding hair can be fun as well as formal, and in the very next picture we find the same bride in a much more casual moment. The smile is genuine this time, caught by the camera but not created for it.

The long, dark, curly wedding hair has also changed its mood, swept back behind the shoulders but still, with a couple of forward strands, framing the bride's undeniably happy face.

She looks so relaxed, in fact, that if it weren't for the veil, the gown and the long white gloves that reach past her elbows, you'd think she was a teenager at a party, or out with friends. Even the tiara has retreated from prominence, and looks more like part of the building structure behind the bride, rather than the pinnacle of a natural, stunning curly wedding hair style.

Can you see the third picture of this happy, long haired bride?

Traditional Curly Wedding Hair Updos

The redhead who begins the middle row of the gallery wears a traditional and very beautiful wedding updo for curly hair, complete with tiny flowers. A number of elegantly curled strands have been left loose on the side, and another trails down her neck at the back.

The second last picture in the gallery shows another classic bridal updo, with a veil that's become largely symbolic, tucked safely behind so that everyone can appreciate the full beauty of the bride's curly wedding hair.

A single, sensuous strand of hair lures the eye away from the tiara and the crown of curls, down past the dark eyes with their arched brows and inevitably on towards the lips before twisting away suddenly ... and then returning, tentatively.

That one, deliberate strand of hair is almost a metaphor for courtship and seduction.

A similarly classic example of curly hair for brides can be found in the fourth picture of the top row of the gallery. A curly updo, it makes full use of the loose curls that mark this style - two rather more towards the back than is usual, and a cute strand twisting over the forehead on one side. A tiara gathers in the tower of curls that stands atop this traditional bridal hair do.

Half Up Half Down Curly Wedding Hair

While curly wedding hair can be either up or down, it can sometimes be a bit of both.

The middle picture in the last row of the gallery shows one of these half up half down wedding hair styles.

From the back you can see that the bridal hair has been partly gathered in a bun formed from a pair of braids on either side of the head. A trio of white flowers crowns this pretty and elegant little bun while beneath it, the full length of the bride's curly hair tumbles down her back.

You can't question the beauty of this style, or its perfect match with the wedding gown of choice.

The photo above this one shows the same style from the front, with the hair brought forward onto the shoulders.

Two different kinds of half up half down wedding hair styles are pictured in the top row of the gallery, in the first and last photos.

The first is a virtual ponytail, but this curly wedding hair has been raised above the hair line to give volume and lifted again at the back, before tumbling down behind the neck. A halo of flowers marks the line where the hair is gathered for the ponytail, and where the half up half down sections meet.

The most beautiful feature of any curly hair updo is the loose strands that frame the face. In this bridal style that feature is muted, but not forgotten.

The last picture in the top row is very different, though the hair style uses the same half up half down approach.

Here the hair is raised even more noticeably at the front before being lifted a second time at the crown of the head. From there, in a diminishing cascade of curls, it runs down the length of the bride's neck to the level of her shoulders.

Much more prominent this time are the curls beside the cheeks. Again the line is marked where the hair rises, but with jewelry rather than flowers.

The second picture in the middle row of the gallery shows yet another half up half down curly wedding hair style.

This bride is viewed from the front, but the hair that's raised in coils at the crown of her head is clearly visible, like the long curly hair that tumbles down behind her neck and shoulders.

Two long strands of her curly wedding hair have been brought to the front.

But Wait! There's More Curly Wedding Hair!

This gallery has some great pictures of curly bridal and wedding hair styles.

Short curly hair

Short Curly Hair

For any woman who knows who she is, a short curly hair cut and what she wants. Nothing spells out confidence like a woman with a fabulous short curly haircut.

The contrast between a mop of beautifully cut, healthy curls and a sleek Armani suit means that your business opponent (or your date – or husband) is in big trouble. You take no prisoners.

Then there’s the ease. Wash and go hair is the envy of every woman in the car pool lane and the ladies’ room line. No extra fifteen to thirty minutes to blow-dry long hair for you! You’re in the shower and out the door in zero to fifteen minutes – faster than an Italian sports car.

A Short Curly Cut!

Ready to take the plunge and cut your curly hair in a short curly haircut?

  • 1. Remember the shrinkage rule. No, no, no. Not guys and bathing suits – the hair on your head. When you go to a stylist, he or she will wash your hair and then cut it while it’s wet. When your hair dries, it will appear to shrink from the distended length at which he or she cut your hair when it was wet. So remember that it will be shorter than it looks at first cut.
  • 2. Layer with care. The problem with layers on short curly hairstyle is that if not done properly you can get a tiered stadium look on your head instead of a natural flow to your curls that comes with proper reduction of bulk and width but following the organic wave your particular hair holds.
  • 3. Length matters. If your curly hair is super-fine and curly, a very short curly do may not be what you want. Consider a medium short cut. If your curly hair is loose and loopy, a short haircut will look completely different than it will on someone who’s curly hair is fine and tight.
  • 4. Face it. Short curly hair is clean, sexy and sophisticated. It also draws more attention to your face than a longer hair cut. So re-think your make up, your eyebrows and your earrings.
  • 5. Product. The right products make a huge difference on hair, and an even more pronounced difference on short, curly hair.
  • So, let’s get to the options:

  • Gel - Great for short curly hair that you don’t want to blow dry. Gel and go. You’ll get sculpting power with a little gel. It’ll give fine hair the impression of thickness. And as with any product – don’t overdo it.
  • Pommade - From the old-fashioned barbershop to the sophisticated salons of today, this wax-based product will give you molding power. Warm it up a little in your hands and don’t use too much at once.
  • Mousse - Volume is the name of the game with mousse. It can dry your hair out so don’t use it for too many days in a row.
  • Styling crème will give your short curly hair a just-woke-up look. It may also protect your short curly hair cut from heat in dryers.
  • Shine spray contains silicone which coats the hair shafts and makes hair shiny, but can weight hair down. Watch out for this. Temper the amount you use for your short, curly haircut.

CurlyHairSalon.com’s Review of Strictly Curls book:

"This book is brilliantly written for the curly hair novice. It shows you exactly how to position your hands to style the hair in an easy step-by-step guide. But what I like best about this book is it actually shows each curly model styling their own hair! That’s what makes this book so brilliant in comparison to other curly hair guides I’ve seen on the market. The pictures are clear and very detailed making it very hands on and easy to follow. From tighter curls to loose waves, the styles are modern and stylish. After trying the step-by-step guide, I realized styling my own hair is not as hard as it seems if you have a guide. This guide is definitely a must have if you have curls!

The easy updos are much too easy once you get the hang of it. I would never have been able to create an updo like this on my own. I guess I’ll be saving some money on my hair this holiday season! Thanks Nicole! ~ Janice"

Nicole works as a stylist in Reston, Virginia where she has a clientele primarily with curly hair. She has always loved curly hair and has developed a passion for curls over the years.

While listening to her clients talk about their frustrations with their hair, she noticed a recurring theme: not knowing what to do with their hair other than put it in a pony tail.

To help, Nicole created Strictly Curls so her clients and women everywhere have a useful resource that teaches them how to style their hair up in a professional and fun manner.

    Cut curly hair

The grass is always greener on someone else’s lawn. The same can be said for how we cut curly hair. But what's interesting is that anyone who has curly hair wants straight hair. Anyone with straight hair wants curly hair. Luckily, there are remedies: hair straightening irons and chemicals, perms and humid weather in the summer on the east coast to frizz even a poker straight head of hair, and dry desert weather in the west to take the curl out of Orphan Annie.

However, if you are blessed with curly hair and have made peace with your head of hair, then one of the biggest challenges you face is how to cut curly hair.

Curly hair is fabulous – it can be sassy, sophisticated or sexy. However, the way you cut curly hair can be your ticket to chic or your highway to hell.

So follow these steps when you get a curly hair cut:

The best way to cut curly hair is on an angle to establish volume without the bulk.

  • To get the best curly haircut, first consider your options.
  • Celebrity worship isn’t necessarily advised here, but they are out there looking their best, so consider some curly hair cuts on gorgeous celebs like: Meg Ryan, Jill Scott, Will’s pal Grace, Macy Gray, Kashanna Evans, Helena Bonham Carter, Andie MacDowell, Kerri Russell and (when her curly hair cut is showing) Nicole Kidman. Don’t like any of those? Read on.

    Curly Hair Cut Basics:

  • Don’t force it. The important thing when cutting curly hair is to allow the hair to flow, organically. This doesn’t mean don’t cut it. Au contraire. The curly hair cut is very important. If you don’t cut curly hair, you will end up with an unshaped mass. The trick is to alleviate bulk and width. A hair stylist who specializes or is even just proficient in curly hair cuts will know how to cut the hair to eliminate the bulk – without necessarily eliminating the length – and lessening the width of the hair so you don’t end up with a flared helmet shape on your head.
  • Layers. Beware of layering hair. The problem with layering hair in a curly hair cut is that if layering that straight haired people employ is used in a curly hair cut, you may end up with flat tiers of hair on day two or three or five after the hair cut.
  • Thinning is not the same as eliminating bulk. Any thinning of curly hair in a curly haircut may lead to unwanted frizz. Your stylist needs to know the difference between thinning hair (as done with straight haired people who have thick hair) and eliminating bulk in a curly haircut.

  • Combing Curly Hair – Use a wide-tooth comb. Don’t even think about using one of those black barbershop deals with the teeth so close together it could double as a bread knife.

Your curly hair cut deserves the best, and the wide teeth on a comb will get rid of snarls, tangles and knots, while preserving the integrity of your curly hair and your curly hair cut by allowing the hair to flow naturally, rather than get processed through the meat grinder teeth of a too tightly teethed comb.

Blow-drying Curly Hair Cuts – Use a diffuser on the end of your hair dryer and use cool air to keep your curl.

Why, why, why? Why do you have curly hair?

Your hair is curly because of your chemical makeup. Not the makeup you buy at the Clinique counter – the atoms that make up your body’s chemistry.

Hair is actually made of protein that contains sulfides (or sulfer atoms). Sulfer atoms that bond are called disulfide bonds.

If two sulfides on a protein atom are far away from each other, when they do come together to bond, the protein in between bends. This is what causes curls.

Anyone with curly hair has a lot of disulfide bonds – more than people with straight hair. Anyone who gets a perm to make their hair curly is putting chemicals on their hair to try and make more disulfide bonds.

Determine Your Face Shape - Facial Shape Characteristics

    Different Face Shapes
Determining your facial shape is the best way to choose that perfect short hair style. Each face has a specific set of characteristics that place the face into one of seven categories.

Diamond: narrow forehead, small chin, wide cheeks

Heart: wide, short forehead; small chin

Oval: high, narrow forehead; round chin

Rectangle: long face, jaw and chin

Round: wide, short forehead; short chin and jaw

Square: short, wide forehead; square jaw

Triangular: narrow forehead, widening cheeks and wider, even, jaw

Once you have determined which of the seven facial shapes you have, you will be able to better choose the correct cut and style. Short hair styles that are perfect for some facial shapes are completely unflattering for others.

Hair Tips for Perfect Hair - Hair Care

    Hair tips
Almost everyone has hair on his or her head. Almost no one really knows what to do with that hair. Very few people know how to best care and share their hair properly. There is help for the vast majority who firmly believe that hair was simply meant to keep your head warm in winter.

    1. Do not wash and repeat. The idea of keeping natural oils in your hair may seem gross, but it is actually the best way to have healthy, shiny, and beautiful hair. The most that is recommended for washing your hair is once every other day. The other days, the hair should be rinsed, but not washed. This helps to prevent the over oiling of the hair by overactive oil glands that are thrust into over activity due to the dry nature of the hair and scalp from frequent hair washing.

    2. Pick a color, any color. The idea of constantly re-dying the hair over and over again is getting old and doing some serious damage to the hair. While the dying practices are much gentler now then before, dying one's hair can still cause dry hair and scalp. Constant dying can also increase the chances of breakage and split ends.

    3. Drop the Blow dryer. The blow dryer, mother's friend, is not as friendly as it seems. By heating the hair and drying it quickly, the hair can become damaged and fried. It is best to towel dry the hair and then wrap it in a towel or cloth to finish drying at a natural rate. This will ensure the health and smoothness of your hair.

    4. Do not fear product. There are many products on the market for hair. Most of the products promise bigger volume or smoother hair. While most of the products do not do as promised, finding the right product can make all the difference in the shine and in the ease of care of the hair.
